Named after its position in the Queensland Department of Primary Industries breeding trial — *Row 2, Experiment 2* — when the cultivar was selected in 1991 from a Kensington Pride × unknown-parent cross. The unromantic code name stuck through commercial release; Queensland growers playfully call it 'Artoo'.
R2E2 — pronounced "R-two-E-two", playfully called Artoo by Queensland growers in homage to Star Wars — is Australia's flagship modern mango. The unromantic name is a direct survival from its breeding history: the cultivar was selected in 1991 by the Queensland Department of Primary Industries at the Bowen Research Station, and its laboratory designation — Row 2, Experiment 2 — somehow followed it through commercial release without anyone bothering to invent a friendlier consumer-facing name. The cultivar is a chance seedling cross with Kensington Pride as the recorded parent and an unidentified second parent.
R2E2 has displaced no other Australian cultivar exactly, but it has reshaped the country's mango export strategy. Australia is a small global mango producer by volume — roughly 70,000 tonnes annually, less than 1% of world production — but it has built a premium niche on counter-seasonal supply to East Asia and the Gulf, where Australian mangoes arrive in November-January when no Northern Hemisphere supply is available. R2E2's combination of striking visual appeal (vivid red blush over yellow), large size (often 800g+), and exceptional shelf life made it the cultivar of choice for that export trade, and it now anchors Australian mango shipments to Korea, Japan, UAE, Singapore and Hong Kong.
A ripe R2E2 is a substantial fruit — 600–1200 g, with prize specimens topping 1.5 kg — broadly oval with a slight beak, with a thick, smooth, golden-yellow skin that develops an intense red-pink blush over the sun-exposed shoulder. The flesh is firm, deep orange, almost completely fibre-free, with a small seed and a Brix profile of 13–17°. Like its Brazilian counterpart Palmer, R2E2 prioritises supply-chain qualities over connoisseur flavour: the variety is mildly sweet rather than perfumed, with a faint resinous undertone that some palates appreciate and others find restrained.
R2E2 is grown across Australia's tropical north — Queensland (Bowen and Burdekin districts are the volume centres), the Northern Territory (around Darwin and Katherine), and northern Western Australia (Kununurra). The southern Queensland season (November–January) coincides with the Australian summer holiday and the country's Christmas-meal calendar, which has cemented R2E2's role in modern Australian food culture. The canonical preparation is the mango cheek — two flesh halves cut on either side of the central seed, scored crosswise, and inverted so the cubes pop up for eating with a spoon. Mango cheeks are a Christmas Day staple alongside seafood and pavlova, and the start of "mango season" in late October is broadly reported in the national news as an unofficial start to the Australian summer.
